4.4 Assessment of Significance
4.4.1 Assessment of Significance
Below is the assessment of the subject area using the guidelines Assessing Heritage Significance
(DP&E 2023), Assessing Significance for Historical Archaeological Sites and 8Relics9 (Heritage NSW 2009),
Assessing Heritage Significance (Heritage NSW 2001):
Table 7: Assessment Criteria and Significance Assessment
Heritage NSW Criteria
Assessment
Criterion (a) Historical Significance: an item is
important in the course, or pattern, of NSW9s
cultural or natural history (or the local area)
The subject area consists of the former Hume
Highway route (Camden Valley Way), but due to
ongoing maintenance and upgrades, no longer
reflects in fabric or physical form the historical
nature of this previous transport route. This item
does not meet the threshold for significance for
this criterion.
Criterion (b) Associative Significance: an item has
strong or special association with the life or works
of a person, or group of persons, of importance in
NSW9s cultural or natural history (or the local area)
The subject area is near to several smaller
landholdings of prominent local historical figures
but does not maintain a connection with these
persons. This item does not meet the threshold
for significance for this criterion.
Criterion (c) Aesthetic Significance: an item is
important in demonstrating aesthetic
characteristics and/or a high degree of creative or
technical achievement in NSW (or the local area)
The subject area, consisting of a bitumen-surfaced
road reserve which is subject to heavy use, is a
physically intrusive/functional element in the
landscape. This item does not meet the threshold
for significance for this criterion.
Criterion (d) Social Significance: an item has strong
or special association with a particular community
or cultural group in NSW for social, cultural or
spiritual reasons (or the local area)
The subject area does not have a particular social
connection. This item does not meet the
threshold for significance for this criterion.
Criterion (e) Research Potential: an item has
potential to yield information that will contribute
to an understanding of NSW9s cultural or natural
history (or the local area)
The subject area has a very low potential for
archaeological deposits to be present. The areas of
heritage item curtilages which are within the
subject area have a similar low potential for
archaeological deposits. This item does not meet
the threshold for significance for this criterion.
Criterion (f) Rarity: an item possesses uncommon,
rare or endangered aspects of NSW9s cultural or
natural history (or the local area)
The subject area is not rare, having already been
subjected to severe disturbance, unlike some of
the surrounding farmlands. This item does not
meet the threshold for significance for this
criterion.
Criterion (g) Representativeness: an item is
important in demonstrating the principal
