Statement of significance for 8Rheinbergers Hill9
The cottage 8Rheinbergers Hill9 is visually prominent due to its location at the crest of an locally prominent
hill along the route from Camden to Narellan, however current management procedures have removed the
context and setting of this item, and the introduction of intrusive fencing, replacement of original fabric
and creation of a public reserve out of the item9s curtilage, including the total removal of vegetation, have
seriously impacted the potential to interpret and understand the remaining heritage value of this item.
Despite these impacts, the item still has the potential to continue to community understanding of previous
historical land use and grants, and to allow the legacy of Thomas Herbert and other local smallholding
farmers to remain in the evolving local landscape.
4.3.3 Contribution of Archaeological potential
The lands within the subject area were previously disturbed by agricultural activity, which in and of itself
would be unlikely to produce archaeological deposits of any significance. The archaeological potential of
the subject area is considered to be very low, and this does not contribute any significance to the subject
area as a whole.
4.3.4 Contribution of landscapes and views
The landscape around the subject area has aesthetic qualities which relate to the previous smallholder
farming practices which typified much of the Nepean River floodplain around Camden during the late 19th
and early 20th centuries. Some significant views have been identified which overlook the subject area,
however these viewpoints are not located within the subject area itself.
The subject area consists largely of the road reserve of Camden Valley Way, which while it is an intrusive
element to these views, marks the original route of the Hume Highway. This road has been subject to
substantial upgrades historically but remains as a representation of the connection between Camden and
Narellan, and therefore exists within the visual landscape as a necessary signpost and physical embodiment
of this connection between local population centres. These views also incorporate various levels of
vegetation, however the current overgrown state of much of the hedges associated with the Yamba
Heritage item does not reflect the historical nature of the former Hume Highway route.
The heritage value of the subject area, therefore, is largely unaffected by the surrounding landscape views,
as it does not incorporate significant viewpoints or vistas despite the proximity to sites which do.
