Heritage NSW Criteria
Assessment
Criterion (b) Associative Significance: an item has
strong or special association with the life or works
of a person, or group of persons, of importance in
NSW9s cultural or natural history (or the local area)
This item is associated with Frederick Longley, a
locally important historical figure who was a
teacher at Narellan from 1906 to 1915. This item
meets this criterion at a local level of significance.
Criterion (c) Aesthetic Significance: an item is
important in demonstrating aesthetic
characteristics and/or a high degree of creative or
technical achievement in NSW (or the local area)
This item has landmark qualities and is located in a
place of prominence along the route from Narellan
to Camden. This item meets this criterion at a
local level of significance.
Criterion (d) Social Significance: an item has strong
or special association with a particular community
or cultural group in NSW for social, cultural or
spiritual reasons (or the local area)
This item has been subject to several campaigns by
local resident historical groups to preserve historic
value in the district, and was the prominent
example used in those campaigns. This item meets
this criterion at a local level of significance.
Criterion (e) Research Potential: an item has
potential to yield information that will contribute
to an understanding of NSW9s cultural or natural
history (or the local area)
This item retains some potential for limited
archaeological resources to be available,
particularly in the area where previous structures
were removed. However, it is not clear that
information gathered would contribute new or
unique knowledge to the historical record. This
item does not meet the threshold for significance
for this criterion.
Criterion (f) Rarity: an item possesses uncommon,
rare or endangered aspects of NSW9s cultural or
natural history (or the local area)
This cottage is one of several similar items in the
region. However, encroaching development and
lack of maintenance and care for original fabric
entails a trend of increasing rarity for this class of
item. It is a rare example of a relatively intact
cottage, with a high degree of original fabric. This
item meets this criterion at a local level of
significance.
Criterion (g) Representativeness: an item is
important in demonstrating the principal
characteristics of a class of NSW9s cultural or
natural places or cultural or natural environments
(or the local area)
This cottage is a representative example of a smallhold farm cottage, which retains elements and
context within its curtilage which demonstrate the
previous land use of the local area. This item
meets this criterion at a local level of significance.
Statement of significance for 8Yamba9
The cottage 8Yamba9 is a visually distinctive small-scale farming weatherboard cottage in federation style. It
