3.1.1 General Description of the Subject Area
The subject area (as depicted in Figure 1) is characterized by the former Hume Highway, and the
intersection between this route (Camden Valley Way) and Kirkham Lane. The subject area is dominated by
the raised elevation of Herbert9s Hill reserve, where the 8Rheinbergers Hill9 cottage is located, and the
surrounding former farmlands which stretch on the Nepean River floodplain which stretches in the
direction of the Camden township. The subject area was inspected on the 11th of August 2023 by Samuel
Ward and consisted of an analysis of potentially significant fabric remaining within or near to the subject
area, and an inspection of any potentially significant views and vantages in and around this landscape. The
areas intended for modification as part of the proposed works were inspected in order to identify any
conflicts or potential for impacts to heritage value. The two heritage items identified within the subject
area in Section 1 were inspected for this report.
3.1.2
Description of Identified Heritage Items
8Yamba9 Cottage
This heritage item9s curtilage is bounded by Camden Valley Way on its southern edge, and this boundary is
heavily overgrown with screening vegetation which is not actively maintained at its previous height. The
southern outbuilding/cottage of this site, which is located along Camden Valley Way, is currently
overgrown with vegetation and structurally unsound. The Yamba homestead is in fair condition and is
currently occupied. The rest of the site holds little indication of the removal of outbuildings around the
house. The southern cottage is surrounded by former farmlands, and there is no evidence of other uses
beyond the historic agricultural use.
The fence along Camden Valley Way consists of a variety of differing styles and fabric in several states of
repair, and as such is not considered to be intact. This item, while much of the original fabric has degraded,
still retains its original form, and much of the original fabric survived intact. Plates Plate 8 to Plate 11 show
this item.

Valley Way.

structure associated with Yamba – note the overgrown
vegetation and surrounding former agricultural lands.
