Review of Environmental Factors - Camden Valley Way Upgrade and Liz Kernohan Drive Extension (Final) - Flipbook - Page 51
6.10.4 Recommendation 1:
During construction, the works are to be consistent with the Biodiversity Guidelines – Protecting and
managing biodiversity on RTA projects, and any specific requirements of management arrangements
would be implemented to manage environmental risks associated with weeds, pest species and
pathogens. As a minimum this would include:
•
Completion of a site weed assessment and, if necessary, based on the assessment
outcomes, a weed management plan;
•
Implementation of appropriate weed control methods and weed disposal; and
•
Implementation of appropriate hygiene protocols where there are potential or known
pathogen risks.
•
Preclearing surveys should be undertaken by a suitably qualified ecologist. Similarly, all
tree removal must be supervised by a suitably qualified ecologist.
•
The construction laydown areas for the activity should be located away from the tree
protection zone of the vegetation to be retained, with appropriate tree protection
measures implemented (if required) to eliminate adverse impacts.
6.10.5 Recommendation 2:
Compensatory plantings as per the Landscape Plan to offset the tree removal required for the
development.
6.11 LANDSCAPE AND VISUAL IMPACT
6.11.1 Existing Environment
The project area is located at the current interface between urban and rural land uses. It is relatively
flat and has some tree coverage. Land to the north of Camden Valley Way and those adjoining
Kirkham Lane are typically open rural lands previously used for grazing. Sites with local heritage
significance are located on either side of the north- eastern stretch of Camden Valley Way.
The verges of Camden Valley Way currently contain fragmented linear tree plantings within no
significant biodiversity value. The affected area of Kirkham Lane has a row of trees with regrowth
native vegetation and exotic vegetation which includes weed species on either side of the road
reserve.
6.11.2 Impact Assessment
The proposed works will require the removal of approximately 98 trees including non-mature trees,
exotic and weed species (overgrown African Olives) from the road reserves of Camden Valley Way
and Kirkham Lane, and the land to the east of Liz Kernohan Drive extension.
Trees to be removed from Camden Valley Way reserve are largely located at the interface of
agricultural and recreational lands. As such the existing visual buffer to the residential area will not
be significantly impacted proposed clearing. Amendments have been made to the design to include
a retaining wall on the northern side of Camden Valley Way to retain some of the mature Liquidamber
Trees in the vicinity of the proposed works. No vegetation removal is proposed from the north-east
stretch of Camden Valley Way where the heritage listed parcels are located.
Tree removal from the verges of Kirkham Lane is largely confined to the western side of the road
with only three trees being removed from the eastern side and thereby minimising any impact on
the adjoining heritage listed land.
